Drink Recipes for Singers that are NOT BORING

Jan 15, 2024

Tea with honey, ginger, and lemon is BORING!

Singers, I’ve got the last recipe list you’ll ever need because I’m going to teach you the framework behind how I build my recipes so you can get crafty and make your own.

Sidenote on lemon. I love lemon, but not in my elixirs. Lemon is a powerful acid that cuts through phlegm, so I’d really only ever resort to using lemon if I have like bronchitis. Otherwise, it dries out my vocal cords and there are other alternatives to help reduce phlegm. If I am dealing with a cold, I like to go with something effective but less harsh like peppermint. I still love honey and ginger as ingredients, but I like to make my drinks for vocalists more interesting.

I'm going to share my 3 favorite recipes that taste amazing and literally soothe your soul! They feel like drinking a big cup of health. But first, here's the framework I'm following...

My simple framework that you can use to invent your own singers elixirs includes 4 basic elements:

 1. An herbal tea base (or other liquid)

 2. An antimicrobial element

 3. An anti-inflammatory element

 4. A super moisturizing element

For your tea, always choose non-caffeinated so you don’t dry out your voice. For your super moisturizing element, if you’re using something like coconut water, that can become your base and you don’t necessarily need the tea.

Now I’m going to give you my favorite singers recipes, and after this I’ll give you a list for each element so you can get creative and start building your own concoctions!

Recipe 1: "Nourished"

  • Throat Coat Tea
  • White onion (carries a lot of moisture and antimicrobial)
  • Garlic (antibacterial, antiseptic)
  • Ginger (anti-inflammatory and antioxidant)
  • Turmeric (antimflammatory)
  • Pinch of black pepper helps turmeric absorption
  • Manuka honey
  • Optional, add some Spirulina for extra antioxidants

I usually make a big pot of this to last for 3 days. I don’t measure things I just go by intuition.

Recipe 2: "Refreshed"

  • Peppermint tea
  • Cucumber (this can be juiced or muddled)
  • Watermelon (this can be juiced or muddled)
  • Honey
  • Bromelain tincture
  • Mint leaves

Slap the mint, it’s a bartenders secret to releasing the aromas.

Recipe 3: "Soaked"

  • Coconut water,
  • Soaked chia seeds (about equal parts chia seeds and water, takes 10 mins to plump)
  • Propolis tincture
  • Cantelope (this can be juiced or muddled)
  • Garnish with basil leaves

Those 3 elixirs will keep your vocal cords super happy and healthy.

Other tips for happy vocals:

Water is the OG best friend of singers, however much they say you should drink in a day, try to hit that and then some.

Alcohol, caffein and dairy aren’t really the best for us, but so is removing things that you love.

Air conditioning and sleeping with the fan in your face is not ideal.

Sleeping with a humidifier is a great idea!

Always warm up your voice before singing or recording vocals, it’s like stretching before a workout.
